Kelli Eubanks (14-6) was the Rams' tough-luck loser in the opener.

In its 12-season run as a player in the NCAA tournament, Gonzaga has been just about every seed imaginable within its range of credentials: It's been everything from a 2 through a 7 and it's been a 10 and a 12. But never an 8, until this season — the Zags' lot opposite Florida State in Friday night's first-round game. However, Gonzaga once was a 9 — essentially the same as an 8, the winner in the crosshairs of a No. 1 seed — and that didn't turn out so badly.

Mike Anderson hears it regularly: teams that press just don't like to be pressed. "I beg to differ," Missouri's head coach said Thursday. "We work on (pressing) every single day. Those are guys who have never played basketball before."

There were few tears when it was over. Maybe that's the strangest part. Nearly every eye was dry in the Loyola Marymount locker room 20 years ago when the most improbable, sorrow-filled and inspiring run in NCAA Tournament history came to an end in the Bay Area. "It wasn't about winning and losing by that point," Bo Kimble said last week by phone.

A Franciscan, a Benedictine and a Jesuit were walking down the road when suddenly a vision appeared before them. They saw Mary and Joseph in the manger, kneeling beside the baby Jesus' crib. The Franciscan and Benedictine fell to the ground and began to worship.

It's the physical play. The Big Ten is known for kind of slowing it down and pounding it inside.   -Jason Love

It happens nearly every year: an unheralded player, maybe from a school few people know about, goes on a scoring tear or single-handedly carries his team through a couple of rounds of the NCAA tournament. Two years ago, little Stephen Curry from Davidson dashed his way through the bracket, shooting the Wildcats past Gonzaga, Georgetown and Wisconsin on the way to the regional finals. There was Wally Szczerbiak taking Miami (Ohio) to the 1999 Sweet Sixteen, Bo Kimble carrying Loyola Marymount into the

Every year, the NCAA tournament releases its brackets -- four regions of 16 teams, seeded 1-16. And every year, offices around the country drop in productivity because so many people are focused on the games. One of the most intriguing aspects of the NCAA tournament is what teams will win the biggest upset.
